Dress Code as written in the 2008-2009 Handbook

DRESS CODE:

 

Students’ dress and grooming must not disrupt the educational process; interfere with the maintenance of a positive teaching/ learning climate, or compromise reasonable standards of health, safety, and decency.  If a style of dress or grooming becomes or appears to become disruptive to the educational process or constitutes a threat to the safety or health of students, it will not be permitted in school. Further, some types of dress are considered inappropriate when worn in school since they do not promote an educational atmosphere that is conducive to wholesome learning. It is strongly recommended that students treat school as a place of business and dress in a manner that would be appropriate in a business-like setting. The dress code applies to all school functions and programs, including athletic events.

 

The following Dress Code is a minimum standard for all students in the District; however, athletic teams and student organizations may require more stringent standards.

Ø      Personal cleanliness, neatness and good grooming are expected at all times.

Ø      Hair must be neat, clean and well groomed.

Ø      Students should not write or draw on their skin or body.

Ø      Hats or full head covering will not be worn inside the building  (for both girls and boys).

Ø      Shoes or sandals must be worn. No footwear shall be worn that shall be damaging to the floors or dangerous to the student’s safety.  Flip flops and sandals are allowed but parents (especially of students in the lower grades) are encouraged to provide shoes that will stay on the child’s feet during recess for the safety of their child.    

Ø      Shirts shall be worn at all times. Tops that show the front or sides of your body such as tank tops, muscle shirts, mid-riff tops, halter-tops, low cut tops, or are excessively tight, etc. are not acceptable. No part of your torso should show at any time.

Ø      No clothing or apparel worn shall contain or display obscene lettering or information that may tend to advertise or promote the use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, satanic symbols, and/, or inappropriate messages.

Ø      Students are allowed to wear shorts in the fall and spring.  Shorts are not allowed from November 15 through March 15.  Extremely short shorts, tight clothing (such as biking pants), or jeans with holes or excessive patches are not permitted. The leg of the shorts should be at least mid thigh length and not have significant slits.

Ø      Skirts should be at least mid thigh length and not have significant slits.  This length is expected even if leggings or other apparel are worn under the skirt.

Ø      Flannel or cotton “pajama style” pants are not to be worn to school.

Ø      Coats or outer wear in place of coats must be kept in a locker or on a hook.

Ø      Chain medallions, chain belts, or wallets with chains are prohibited.

Ø      If outside temperature is below freezing students must wear coats.

Ø      Students shall wear clothing of sufficient length and size so that when bending, sitting, or stooping, articles of undergarments are not visible. 

Ø      Pants should be worn at the waist.

Ø      Students in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 will dress for PE.  After PE students will change back into their regular clothes.

Parents are asked to use discretion and help assure their child is properly dressed for school in consideration of their age and maturity. Student dress will not limit or excuse any student from taking part in any indoor or outdoor activity. Students with inappropriate dress will have to change to appropriate attire and may receive a referral.  Parents will be called if dress is not deemed appropriate by the staff or Administration and the issue cannot be worked out with the student. Parents will also be contacted if the behavior is repeated. Repeated violations of the dress code may be considered to be gross insubordination.  The building principal/superintendent is the final authority for judging appropriateness of a student’s appearance.
