Field Trip to the Peoria Art Guild

By Hilarie Clevenger

January 16, 2007

On Tuesday January 16, 2007 Mrs. Clevenger and Mrs. McCabe took the 4th grade on a field trip to the Peoria Art Guild.  Upon arriving we were escorted to the gallery area where we looked at a glass exhibit that is in the process of being installed for display.  There were many interesting pieces on display.  One piece was a super sized hot dog in a bun with french fries all made out of glass!  We gathered with our leaders and discussed what we thought of the pieces on display. The students had many insights to share with our leaders!  We were amazed at the variety of pieces and how different they all were!  After that we switched gears as we learned about how a coat of arms is designed and it's importance to knights and families of the Middle Ages.  We learned that every part of the design had meaning from the shape of the shield to the colors and symbols used in the design.  We went downstairs to the studio area where each student got to create their own coat of arms using a piece of canvas and fabric markers.  Everyone got right to work!  After everyone had a chance to complete their creation we headed back to school!  The Peoria Art Guild is located on Harrison Street in downtown Peoria and offers many classes for adults and children. They also sponsor a huge art fair on the riverfront the 3rd weekend in September.  If you'd like more information Mrs. McCabe brought back a few brochures or contact the Peoria Art Guild at 203 Harrison Peoria, Illinois 61602 or call (309) 637-ARTS.
