Rankin Band -Frequently Asked Questions

FAQS

Rankin Band FAQS

(frequently asked questions)

1.           When can a student join band?

Students may join band the fall of 5th grade, or any time after that. Band is included as a class and meets during the school day. Band does not interfere with other classes/extracurricular activities.  Some students sign up for a free lesson before or after school, but that is optional.

2.           How much does it cost to be in band?

There is no charge for being in band.  Band is provided as part of the curriculum here at school.  Students need an instrument and a band book.  Cost for an instrument depends on the arrangements you make.

     4.   How do I find an instrument?

There are at least three different ways to find an instrument for you child.

  • You can rent an instrument from a music store.  Many music stores have rental programs and rent to own programs for band instruments.  The cost varies depending on the instrument, but generally it averages out to between $20 and $30 a month. They usually ask for the first 3 months when you sign up and then it becomes a monthly rental fee.  Many stores will allow you to “trade in” the instrument if for some reason your student decides to switch to another.  You are welcome to use any local music store of your choice.
  • You can get an instrument online.  www.woodwindbrasswind.com is a great source.  But be careful, the lowest price is not always the best.  There is a huge different in quality between brands.  Some “bargain” instruments on the internet are actually constructed so poorly that they can not be repaired.  Please check with me before you order an instrument online.
  • You can borrow an instrument from a family member, neighbor, or friend.  You would be surprised how many people have instruments that are just waiting to be used.
  • Please do not purchase an instrument from Walmart or Sams.  These are not real band instruments even though they look like it.  They break and are not repairable by any musical instrument repairman.
  • If renting or buying an instrument from the music store is not an option, the school does have some instruments available for use.  We want all students at Rankin School who are interested to be able to participate in band.  Please see Mrs. Hamilton if you would like to use a school instrument.

  1.  When I go to the music store, what do I need?

A sales representative will help you.  But you need the following:

Instrument, band book (Essential Elements 2000), reeds, valve oil.  Instrument cleaning kits and a music stand are great to have but can be purchased later if needed.

  1.  What if my child is involved in sports?

That is wonderful!  Many of our band students are also involved in extra-curricular activities.  Band meets during the school day so there are no conflicts with sport practices and games.  Our concerts are scheduled on different evenings than games.

Special Considerations-

  • A band is made of many different instruments.  Not everyone can play the saxophone or the drums!  Keep this in mind!
  • Playing the drums or the French horn requires special approval from Miss Bendt.
  • Braces – All instruments can be played with braces.  The trumpet is a little harder than the others.  Please see me if this is a consideration now or in the future.
